mia.jpg Mia Friedman, NNHS / SYP '08, won first place in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest, an international songwriting competition open to amateur and professional songwriters. For her SYP, Mia traveled to Tennessee to conduct an ethnomusicology study on the evolution of Celtic music and the variety of playing styles. What?

The Senior Year Opportunities (SYP and SPARC) is a 2nd-semester opportunity to create an independent, academic experience, away from the familiar classroom setting, with the focus on independent inquiry and intellectual growth. The goal is to become a Senior Year Scholar and find something that you’ve never done before, but always wanted to do or something you’ve done before, but want to take to a new level and investigate towards mastery.


We believe, that as NNHS seniors, you represent a largely untapped potential resource for "intellectual problem solving, social change, and community contributions." Part of our focus is to put you in the position of the “expert” -- to evaluate and synthesize what you have already experienced. At the same time, we’ll provide you with the proper resources and supports to stretch and challenge yourself both intellectually and personally.

• Fulfills both English and FPTech/Arts requirements for graduation

3rd term Course Work
• Initial presentations and peer/teacher reviews
• Advanced Primary and Secondary Research/Writing
• Readings, journal writing
  • Logistics for field work

4th term Field Experience
• Independent inquiry - Eight weeks of interviews, surveys, writing, researching, working, etc
• Weekly individual and group check-ins
• Final draft of Primary Research Paper
• Summative demonstration/presentation - in front of panel of faculty and SYP alumni reviewers that will help you defend your research conclusions

Your Project will take shape through
• an Incredible Field Experience
• a Paper that reflects your interests and research
• a Project Portfolio (your web page)that organizes and demonstrates the process
• a Presentation that communicates all you have learned
