Where good ideas come from (Steven Johnson)SYPers, watch for artifacts. What are they and how does Johnson analyze them?

Two brilliant examples of our Senior Year Scholars in action.

mia.jpg Mia Friedman, NNHS / SYP '08, won first place in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest, an international songwriting competition open to amateur and professional songwriters. For her SYP, Mia traveled to Tennessee to conduct an ethnomusicology study on the evolution of Celtic music and the variety of playing styles. Click here to see Mia's SYP final presentation video and click here to read about Mia's latest success in the Newton TAB.

Here's a song Mia wrote during her SYP research, "Same White Moon." Simply Brilliant.

rebecca.jpeg Rebecca Kantar NNHS / SYP '10 has won the TEDxYSE grand prize. In SYP, Rebecca researched the emerging industry of Cause Marketing and Leadership. Click here to see her award-winning TEDx talk.

“All men dream; but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty
recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity;
but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men(and women),
for they may act out their dreams with open eyes,
to make it possible.” - T. E. Lawrence

The Senior Year Opportunities (SYP and SPARC) is a 2nd-semester opportunity to create an independent, academic experience, away from the familiar classroom setting, with the focus on independent inquiry and intellectual growth. The goal is to become a Senior Year Scholar and find something that you’ve never done before, but always wanted to do or something you’ve done before, but want to take to a new level and investigate towards mastery.

We believe, that as NNHS seniors, you represent a largely untapped potential resource for "intellectual problem solving, social change, and community contributions." Part of our focus is to put you in the position of the “expert” -- to evaluate and synthesize what you have already experienced. At the same time, we’ll provide you with the proper resources and supports to stretch and challenge yourself both intellectually and personally.
